Project: Grand Hotel, Barras Bridge, Newcastle
Main Contractor: Interserve
Sub-Contractor: Pennine Contracts
Client: Newcastle University
We’ve become a part of Newcastle’s history after supplying materials to revamp an iconic city centre hotel that now provides student housing.
The Grand Hotel, built 111 years ago in 1902, has stood tall in Newcastle’s city centre for over a century and lived through two world wars! Pennine Contracts, who won the ceilings & partitions package, began working on the Grade II-listed building in March 2013 and completed the project in August.
The project saw 66 new en-suite student pods created over 3 floors and we supplied a range of insulation, acoustic and ceiling materials worth in excess of £90k. This all from leading suppliers such as British Gypsum, Profilex and Isover.
Despite the renovation to the interior of the building, the stylish Victorian façade, including the ‘Grand Hotel’ signage carved at the top of the building, remained untouched. By preserving the look of the building, together with the name, we all hope that the historical significance will be preserved.
A project of such local historical value meant that a lot of preparation and detailed planning was taken by a highly experienced team over at Pennine Contracts, who have served the North East for over 25 years.
Through distributing dry lining, acoustic and fire protection boards in addition to MF ceilings and Profilex Access Panels, we have played a part in preserving the City’s heritage.
